Prior to the rise of the famous Mission District of California, the Ohlone Indians inhabited the region over 2,000 years ago. In the late 1700's, Spanish missionaries arrived and came upon the peaceful Ohlone and their hunter-gatherer village. This is where the first mission was founded in 1776, the Mission San Francisco de Asis. As a result, the legacy of California missions and its architectural style would not only grow throughout California but also travel across the nation.
