On Memorial Day weekend, at the end of May, the Beartooth Pass just 10 miles south of Red Lodge, Montana opens for car traffic. At the bottom of the Pass is the Glacier Lake Valley and road sit at about 7,000 feet of elevation. From that altitude the Pass climbs to almost 11,000 feet at the West Summit just over the Montana border in Wyoming. Some of the runs drop over 3,500 to even 4,000 vertical feet. There are lots of incredible couloir’s (see photos) and enough high mountain fun for a wide range of ability levels.

The night before we crashed at a friend’s in this really cool, new real estate development called The Spires at Red Lodge and watched the sun set against the 12,000 foot peaks to the west. We couldn’t believe that in a ski town where they bordered an 18 hole golf course that they were selling complete cottages for under $200,000 – in this day and age who has heard of anything that affordable in a Rocky Mountain ski town.

We all stayed at this really cool new development called The Spires at Red Lodge the night before and went for a big walk on their trail system marveling at the views of the high peaks to the west. We didn’t think there was a ski town anywhere where anything left that was this affordable.

With the pick-up vehicle left behind down at the base of Reefer Ridge we begin the half hour climb around dozens of switchbacks to the west summit. The views up the Glacier Lake Valley are just phenomenal.

As we near the top of the west summit we see the head wall we are about to ski. Gardiner head wall is very steep, anywhere from 35 degrees up to 45 degrees, so we are glad that it is 55 degrees outside because the snow should be soft as it faces east in to the early morning light. There is evidence of several small wet slides on either side of the face so we know we need to keep alert.

Gardiner is awesome corn on our decent so we take the south (steep) side. At the end of our hike out we thumb back up to the car and begin our trek out Reefer Ridge following lunch. There are dozens of lines down to the Glacier Lake Road and there are dozens of ways to get trapped, or cliffed out only to find yourself hiking back out of that which you just skied. When you catch the right line it is pure heaven.

We actually skied to the base of Gunsight Couloir and were able to ski across the creek and right down to our car with only a couple of brief ski removals. We did kick off a big wet slide at the top of Gunsight. We always make sure we skier cut the top of everything we ski and rope the skier in that is making the cut just to be safe. You can see a copy of the photo of our line which is pretty radical for being road accessible.

We chugged back up to the west summit to retrieve our other vehicle and plunged down the 2,000 vertical feet of the Rock Creek head wall on the way back to town for good measure. We had a few cold ones waiting and we hadn’t seen anyone else all day long, except for at the Gardiner head wall and marveled at our great fortune to be living in the last, best place.
