The Legendary Hollywood Sign as the Hollywood Landmark

It is possible to have a more well-known landmark in the world than the celebrated Hollywood sign? The reply to that question is certainly arguable but no one would reject the actual fact the Hollywood sign could be on the top ten of any major list of world points of interest. And why would it not be? Hollywood remains one of the most marvelous places in the world as it blends the history, fantasia, and business of the show business into one place. Of course, millions of men and women have ventured to Hollywood trying to find fame. Some were successful and some were not but every one of them saw this unique welcoming sign upon arriving on this place.

Since 1923, this sign definitely presented an incredible welcome to the scores of tourists that have come to this amazing town. It really is hard to miss the sign as it rests atop Mount Lee in the world famous Santa Monica Mountains. The sign itself is 45 feet tall and 350 feet wide…not quite easy to miss!

Was the planned intent behind the sign to welcome all those venture into Hollywood? No, it was created for the purpose of marketing. The advertising had absolutely nothing to do with movies or celluloid heroes. Surprisingly, the objective of the sign was to draw attention to…houses.

The sign was completed in 1923 with the words HollywoodLand and never stops being a legendary banner heralding the greatness of this legendary celluloid town. H.J. Whitley and Harry Chandler were in the process of developing a housing complex and thought the name HollywoodLand was best for it. The two needed an easy method of endorsing their new development and the concept of an enormous sign on the Hollywood Hills’ side was considered a novel way of doing this.

The Crescent Sign Company constructed the sign with the intention to allow it to stand for a couple of years prior to losing its impression. This would have been true had Hollywood not become a renowned town for the show business. Over time, people presumed the sign was meant to herald the entertainment business. That is simply the purpose it serves nowadays even though that was never the original intention.

The sign has long since risen beyond just marketing vehicle. It is a symbolic representation of American pop culture that functions as a herald for all that the city signifies.

It’s peculiar how landmarks work out at times. Even the best laid marketing plans can fall short miserably but iconic images such as the Hollywood Sign are simply spontaneous. Iconic truly is the right word to define it. Even after nearly 90 years the sign remains strong and proud. More than likely, the sign will serve another 90 years.
