While not all understand the concept behind Amos and Andy, originally known but never aired as Sam and Henry, the show still became quite popular, first with radio listeners and later with television viewers. However, due to the controversy of two white men playing the role two blacks on radio seemed to be far more accepted than when portrayed on television. Although, while bits and pieces of the show have been included in internet archives, folks can now purchase the full Amos and Andy DVD Box Set, if so desired.
Although, in the 1920s when the show first aired, it is doubtful that was ever any real evil intent toward black people. However, the fact that two white men played the voices of two black men who were less than intelligent, it later became associated with racism. Of course, as the Civil Rights Movement did not take place until the mid-1960s, it is hard to know if those listening or watching had any idea that the program may be considered racist at a later date.
Of course, as this is one of the first comedy radio shows to air, it has also become known as a quite historic program. In fact, there are even colleges which use such shows to identify the difference between entertainment and racism in the period. As such, the show has not only provided a great deal of entertainment to many listeners and viewers over the years but has since also become an educational tool.
However, individuals can not argue that changing the voices would also change the characters and programming so many had grown to love over the years. For, the show originally aired on radio in the 1920s to 1940s, then moved to a weekly radio program, then on to television. As such, the show already had a lot of fans and followers by the time it moved to television.
As such, there are still those who love the show and those who find it discriminatory. Of course, when introducing this show to a family, especially one with young children, it may be important to provide a bit of history about both the show as well as the African American community. In addition, it is also important to elaborate on why some individuals find the show rather racist why others do not.
To this end, viewers must decide for oneself whether watching an Amos and Andy DVD, or allowing children to watch such programming is appropriate. However, while the radio show was not as controversial, it is important to realize that many individuals and most of society does see using black face in movies and television as somewhat racist. For, why not just acquire a black man or woman to play such roles rather than having whites play roles which only aim to make blacks look less than intelligent. Read more about: amos and andy dvd
