Isla Fisher is a Scottish-Australian actress who was born in Muscat, Oman in the Middle East though she was raised in Perth Australia. According to Fisher she had a very outdoorsy upbringing and adopted a very Australian, laid back attitude. She was named after the Scottish whisky producing island, Islay and she is the only girl in a family of 5 children. Her parents are Scottish and her father was an international banker, which involved world travel and was the reason why she was born in the Middle East. Her parents are now divorced, her father lives in Germany and her mother and brothers variously in Greece and Nicaragua.
Her acting career began in Australia when she was 9 and achieved success in children’s TV in shows such as Paradise Beach. By the time she turned 18 she had also published two novels for teenage readers. 1994 saw her starring in the most popular Australian soap opera, Home and Away and she won a nomination for a Logie Award for the role in 1996. After her stint ended in 1997, she moved herself to France where she studied theatre and art in Paris, eventually moving to the UK to appear in pantomime and London theatre productions.
Her breakout film role was in the 2002 film, Scooby Doo as the allergic-to-dogs Mary Jane. She also played in The Wannabes, an Australian comedy which resulted in her getting an American agent. Her agent got her a substantial role in the Wedding Crashers which earned her the Breakthrough Performance Award at the MTV Movie Awards in 2005.
Fisher starred in Manhattan in 2006, followed by London with Jason Statham, and then in the romcom Wedding Daze. In 2007 she was cast in The Lookout, a suspense-thriller, followed by Hot Rod and also was cast in The Simpsons Movie (though her part was cut from the final production). Critical acclaim arrived in 2008 when she was cast in Definitely, Maybe along with Rachel Weisz. In 2009, she starred in Confessions of a Shopaholic and for which she received her third nomination from Teen Choice Awards.
She is currently the voice of Beans in Rango, the love interest for the chameleon hero played by co-star, Johnny Depp and directed by Pirates of the Caribbean veteran, Gore Verbinski. Rango is reminiscent of a Bugs Bunny cartoon though made for a feature length presentation. It is currently the number one animated feature film of 2011 and is competing well at the box office against blockbuster productions such as Battle for Los Angeles.
Fisher is married to Sacha Baron Cohen, the British comedian behind films such as Bruno and Ali G. The couple live in London and Los Angeles and have two daughters. The couple met in 2002 and were engaged in 2004, their wedding taking place in Paris, France in 2010. Fisher attended a Jewish study program for three years so she could convert to Judaism in order to be able to marry Baron Cohen.
