We now have the four finalists that will contend for the ultimate prize in the American Idol talent show. One of these is James Durbin, a 22-year singer hailing from the West Coast. A native of Santa Cruz, California, Durbin apparently owes his success to his singing that has been described as “emotional” by a former director of his: Will Guilford.
It’s a fact that Durbin is orphaned of his father, musician Willy Durbin who died when the James was just 9 years old. It’s also known that James suffers from Asperger’s Syndrome as well as Turret’s Syndrome. The latter condition makes him suffer from tics, which director Guilford says are “more pronounced” while James is “waiting for the judges” during the show.
However, Guilford – who had directed James at the Louden Nelson Community Center with whom he has performed for 3 years – also says that these tics naturally disappear as soon as James starts singing. It’s almost as if they weren’t there at all.
Aside from the Louden Nelson Community Center and Guilford, Durbin has also been trained by former Doobie Brothers’ guitarist/keyboardist Dave Ockerman, throug his Musicscool institution. The singer has performed with Ockerman’s Beatles tribute band, The White Ensemble. In December 2008, he appeared with them on stage to perform the song “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.” Durbin received a standing ovation from the audience after the conclusion of his performance of the song.
With most of the people around him – including the 3 judges – praising his talent, one could say that James Durbin could be well on his way to being the next star. Even if he didn’t win, his prowess in the show should be enough for the people to recognize his exceptional talent.
