SEO, or search engine optimization is something which a lot of people find intimidating ? after all, the name sounds like something which isn’t going to be a whole lot of fun. However, it doesn’t have to be an ordeal.

Once you learn a bit about SEO, you might find that SEO can be a lot of fun. Search engine optimization is essentially the practice of using keywords (the words people type into Google or other search engines) in the text of your website, articles and other material online. Let’s put it this way ? say that you have a website which sells camping tents. If you want people to be able to find your site easily by using search engines, you’ll want to optimize your website for the words and phrases which people use when searching the web for camping tents.

You’ll find that in many different ways, SEO can be fun. If you do it right, it really doesn’t have to be all the complicated. Once you look at the process as a fun one, you’ll enjoy it more and it will become easier for you. Need some ideas to make it fun? Well, one great idea is to start out just writing what you want to say in the text for your website. Don’t actually worry about the keywords or anything, but just sit down and write. When you are trying to hit the right amount of keywords, make it into a game and see how close you can get to the right amount the very first time that you try.

SEO does take a little bit of work; but it really isn’t ads difficult or as complex as many suppose it to be. SEM Revealed

Search Engine Marketing is vital today. So we now need to look carefully at where the commercial market-place is going. Any service or product related company must have a website – that’s a given. But a web presence by itself won’t bring results. Purchasers won’t necessarily be able to find you.

Picture a new retail premises opening up shop: It’s taken time, money and expertise to get to this stage. It’s opening time, and they’re looking for clients… Then they look outside and find they’re in a rural outpost! Nobody will know how to reach them. What kind of sales do you think they’ll manage? The vast majority of business websites have just this problem.

Marketing has undergone a huge change because of the internet. A decade or so ago, it was fashionable to jump on the website bandwagon. Complex graphical websites costing thousands (or tens of thousands) were regularly launched. Obviously, this new business was very welcome to web design companies. Then it became apparent that no-one was visiting these sites. There was a belief that if you built it, they would come. Sadly, this wasn’t true…

Web marketing needs a whole new approach. Traditional marketers would say your site is an advertisement of your products or services. And so to get people to visit the site, they’ll promote it in the press and media, and on TV and radio. Basically keeping it within their frame of reference. They produce the pretty brochure and then market every possible avenue to generate enquiries to send that brochure to. However, this process illustrates an absolute misunderstanding of website marketing.

The World Wide Web isn’t simply a passive display board. It’s a vast interactive tool for people all over the world. We can discover in-depth information, research products and services and chat with others before we buy. The Search Engines – such as Google and MSN (now Bing) – have made this easy for us as customers. They’ve put together massive directories to guide us. Yellow Pages would be a nightmare if it wasn’t indexed properly. How would you ever find what you wanted?

The Search Engines solve this dilemma. And so marketing is forced to move on. If you want customers to find you on the internet, indexation by Google etc. is paramount. Yet if you only show up a few pages in, you might as well forget it. By the time you get to page 5, you can forget it, unless you’ve got a very detail-oriented and persistent customer!

So to give all companies a chance to be on the first pages, the Search Engines came up with a new form of paid advertising. You only pay when someone actually chooses your advert – hence the name ‘Pay-Per-Click’. This caused quite a storm when it happened. Basically, the only time you now paid was when someone who was already interested asked to look at your site. This is an incredibly targeted way of advertising, and done properly, can yield some exceptional results.

Alas, the market is bombarded with this form of advertising these days. Prices have risen hugely. This is mostly due to high bids being put in by marketers with no experience. Some words and phrases command such high click prices that profits aren’t possible for many companies. This happens mostly where lots of clicks are essential to get one buyer. So Search Engine Optimisation is now becoming a preferred method for many to get to page 1.

Do this small task – Enter some service or product keywords (relevant to your business) on Bing or Google. Then check through as far as page three. Can you find your website? Probably not. Consequently, like the situation we described earlier, you’ve got no visibility! Maybe it is there. But is it listed for terms that clients are actually using?

It’s possible you’ve already done some advertising in the paid listings – and maybe you’ve had some results. Are you managing your campaign well though? Are the returns you’re getting good enough? Do you know what the most successful areas are – with accurate statistics to track and measure the quality of your campaigns? With PPC, testing and diagnostics are critical. You’ll never get the best results without correct figures.

It’s very evident today that both global and local commerce are moving swiftly onto the internet. Make the most of this trend. Unless you embrace the internet and utilize all of its advantages, your business will become a dinosaur.

Companies are getting fewer results for a higher spend using time-honoured marketing techniques. So we have to look at updating our modus operandi. We all know it’s vital that all commercial organisations are on the web. Yet that in itself isn’t sufficient. Buyers MUST know how to reach you.

Let’s compare it to a new store opening up… A lot of money has gone into setting it up. They’re ready to go… And only then realise they’re out in the sticks in a no-through road. What’s worse, they haven’t told anyone where they are. How do you think they’ll get on? This is exactly the scenario for 99% of ALL commercial websites in existence.

The World Wide Web has caused a paradigm shift in marketing. Ten years ago, as everyone was getting on the bandwagon, there was an idea that everyone needed a website. Vast amounts of money were spent on all singing/dancing web sites. (A happy situation for web design businesses…) Before long though, the site owners were complaining that no-one looked at their new website! People had thought that if they had a big website, it would be easily spotted. This proved to be a complete fallacy…

Modern internet marketing requires a fundamental shift in thinking from traditional marketing. Traditionalists might see your site in the same way they’d view a sales catalogue. So to drive traffic to that website, you’ll need to use the regular methods of marketing. They’ll recommend media advertising and promotions in the press. Sticking to the familiar routine. They start with a flashy sales site, and then try lots of ‘off-line’ avenues to get people to look at it. Yet in the web economy, this approach is way off the mark!

The internet itself is not just a viewing portal. It allows us to search and research – to discuss ideas and interact with others. It’s completely interactive, bringing massive choice to billions of people. The Search Engines – such as Google and MSN (now Bing) – have made this easy for us as customers. They’ve put together massive directories to guide us. Just think how hopeless it would be trying to find something in a Business Directory with no index! How on earth would anybody get anywhere?

The Search Engines solve this dilemma. For companies though, this changes marketing completely. You MUST be indexed by Search Engines to have any visibility. Yet if you only show up a few pages in, you might as well forget it. Anything below the 5th position on page 1 is largely ignored.

Of course, the Search Engines weren’t blind to this, so they developed an unusual paid advertising scheme so any site could get to the top. It can bring outstanding results if handled well.

Today however, most search terms are overwhelmed with pay per click adverts. New online marketers have forced up the price per click, largely through over-the-top bidding. So it’s often the case now that many are priced out of the market. This happens mostly where lots of clicks are essential to get one buyer. This has brought Search Engine Optimisation to the fore, where driving a site to page one is the goal.

Do this small task – Get onto one of the Search Engines now and look for some keywords that you think apply to you. Can you see your website on the 1st three pages? It’s unlikely. So you’re in the same position as the backstreet shop! And if your site is listed, is it appearing for keywords that your customers will actually enter?

Maybe you’ve already tried some Pay Per Click advertising so you appear in the paid listings, and maybe you’ve achieved some success so far. Can you be sure you’re working it as efficiently as possible? Is your ROI satisfactory? Are you aware of how to assess the quality and viability of each campaign? With PPC, testing and diagnostics are critical. You’ll never get the best results without correct figures.

It’s very evident today that both global and local commerce are moving swiftly onto the internet. Companies must acknowledge this, to survive and flourish in today’s economy.

Search Engine Optimisation News

SEO is essentially a constantly evolving study of what factors the search engines take into account when they ‘rank’ you in their natural search listings. ‘Natural’ search listings are the main lists of results that come up when you search for something. They’re in addition to the PPC lists. The PPC (paid) entries tend to feature at the top and right side of the page. All the others are ‘naturally’ listed from the Search Engine’s index. Search Engines use algorithms to determine a website’s relevancy and importance. This is how they decide on which order to place them in.

Clearly, the goal is to get to the top of the page. Nobody will know we’re there if we’re way down on page eight! No-one knows all the factors that Search Engines (SE’s) use to determine your rank. The SE’s really don’t want anyone to know – so you can’t manipulate or ‘game’ their system.

So, over the years a complete industry has grown up around this. And so we have on one side Google and Bing purposely patenting different technologies. Causing much mystification about their methods! And then you have an industry built around SEO. This uses empirical testing and measuring of various factors to determine which ones are the most important.

Both ‘off page’ and ‘on page’ optimisation is dealt with. There are also ‘off-web’ factors such as demographic and geographic information – but we have no control over this area. (We will cover off page optimisation in a separate article.)

SE ‘On Page’ Optimisation

It’s possible to change the pages of your website to make them ‘friendly’ to the Search Engines. It’s not too complex – it just requires setting your website up the right way. For instance: Utilising H1 and H2 Header Tags, Internal Linking, Keywords and Meta Tags.

That might sound like gobbledy-gook, but don’t be alarmed! Actually, though on page work is straightforward it probably accounts for little. In fact, it is widely believed that it has very little effect at all anymore. Search Engines used to credit on page factors in the past. That’s not how it is now though.

If a site has a lot of in-bound back-links though, on-page factors can still be beneficial. If that’s the case, internal linking and a certain amount of on-page fine-tuning can reap rewards.

A Bit of Advice… A phrase that shows vast numbers of results should not be your first SEO target. For example, on Google’s Search Engine you’ll see 70 million listings in the UK for the term Car Insurance. It’s not rocket science to realise that competing in this area wouldn’t be productive.

And Yet – The phrase ‘Southampton Car Insurance’ only brings in three hundred thousand. (Presuming that was my market). Though still large, this is a much more manageable figure.

I’ve a much better chance in the rankings having added the word ‘Southampton’. In reality, getting ranked for car insurance would cost a fortune! I’d actually be head to head with the really big boys. So not a great idea – especially, in fact, when there are much better ways to go about it.

It’s far better to choose phrases that are more specific to our offering. In SEO terms, they’re referred to as Long Tail Searches, as they include several relevant words. It depends on your competition, but long-tail searches can be up to 6 or 7 words. They’re usually around three or four.

We like to start Search Engine Optimisation using terms that yield less than 500K. However, if the websites at the top of the listings aren’t well optimised, we may stretch to a higher count. We’ll automatically move up the ratings for the more popular search terms as we gain more back-links. Assuming everything goes to plan, we’ll hit the popular phrases in three to twelve months. This is a nicely targeted approach. We’re looking for people who want to buy, so we use terms with a commercial intention!

Back Links should be shared between several web pages on your site and not just restricted to the Homepage. We call this ‘deep-linking’ – and Google in particular likes this. Try back-linking product group pages. They very frequently link up to a range of sub-pages, so driving appropriate terms to them can be very worthwhile. Thus – don’t restrict the back links to just one page. The managing and listing of individual sub-pages is receiving growing attention from the major Search Engines.

Reporting Software for SEO Companies

Finding out where you rank in the search engine results for your chosen keywords is extremely important. However it can be more difficult than you might imagine, especially if you have more than one website. If you only have one website then you may able to track your ranking with manual searches, but if you have more than one site, it can become difficult, and you might use one of the rank checking sites available on the web.

The main issue with these sites is that they are not very accurate. They either give you results from the wrong region, or from too broad a region, i.e. Google.com rankings rather than Google.co.uk rankings. Also, they quite often draw their results from a different hub altogether and so do not give a proper idea of your exact at that given time.

The problem is made worse by the limits Google has put on the amount of searches you can carry out in an hour (currently 200). Making 200 searches is the equivalent to searching 4 keywords and browsing through the results up to page 50. If you have a few sites with several keywords each, then this can pose a big problem.

The answer to these problems would be a piece of software that can automatically search through the results on your desired keywords for your specified site, while staying within Googles search limits. The ideal software will also give you information on you competitors sites, traffic reports for individual keywords, number of backlinks etc.

Most software of this nature wont do all this, let alone give you the option to white-label the software and sell it on as your own. Finding software that is accurate and dependable is very difficult, but not impossible. If you are an SEO company, your results will create the outline of your reputation, and your reports to your clients are a very important part of that process. Your clients need to be able to see genuine data that shows how hard you are working for them.

Because your clients wont understand your business as well as you do, you should provide them with up to date information to help them see what you are doing and what you are achieving for them. It is unlikely that your clients will understand the ins and outs of seo and so creating some key performance indicators for them is a good step to take to allow your relationship with them to grow and for them to be comfortable that you are doing all you can to improve their rankings.
