Contracting a virus is easy, removing it is not so easy. There are many more ways to getting a virus than just watching porn now. They are sent through emails and other forms of communication. They are made to still your passwords to bank accounts and personal files. They are also made to spy on a person or just to annoy you. Encryption sounds like a good idea, but how could it harmful to us?

Encryption, is the process of altering readable data into unreadable form to prevent unauthorized access, and it is what has given people confidence to do online shopping and banking. Encryption is clearly useful for some organizations, especially those concerned with trade secrets, military matters, and other sensitive data. Recently, many financial organizations, such as Bank of America, Time Warner, and Citigroup’s CitiFinancial division, stung by misplaced data of nearly 6 million people, decided to encrypt the backup tapes of customer information that they store with third party vendors.

A very sophisticated form of encryption is used in most personal computers and is available with every late-model web browser to provide for secure communications over the internet. However, from the standpoint of society, encryption is a two-edged sword. For instance, the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon raised the possibility that the terrorists might have communicated with each other using unbreakable encryption programs. (There is no evidence they did.) Should the government be allowed to read the coded email of overseas terrorists, drug dealers, and other enemies? What about the email of all American citizens?

The U.S. government has maintained that it needs access to scrambled data for national security and law enforcement. Indeed, during the 1990s, officials urged that encryption companies be required to include a “back door” in their products that would allow the government to peek at messages exchanged by criminals and terrorists. Companies and consumers said they would not use such a product and contended that criminals surely would not either, It was also argued that many people with the most basic education in mathematics could write their own encryption systems. Ultimately, the back-door idea was dropped.

The 2001 terrorist incidents resurrected the debate. Some academics who, over the objections of the government, had freely published their research on how to make unbreakable codes were haunted by the idea that law enforce-ment might have figured out terrorist plans if the encryption techniques had been kept secret. Although publicly available encryption allows ordinary people to protect their privacy and businesses to protect their data, it is clear that a by-product is limitation on the ability to fight lawbreakers and terrorists.

AVG antivirus is one of the highest ranked free virus scan and removal programs available today. Whether you want the free version or want to shell out some money for the retail version, AVG is one of the highest ranked free virus protection software on the market today. However, I still wouldn’t recommend doing anything you want online and throw caution to the wind. As with every anti virus software it can’t protect against stupidity. When compared to the competition, AVG comes out among the top competitors but that isn’t saying too much when you consider the competition. Throughout the article, I will explain the reasons that 8 out of 10 people agree, AVG is one of the most well performing free virus scan and removal programs available and the difference between that and the retail version.

To begin with, AVG is less resource intensive than many other anti virus software. What I mean by resource intensive is that it takes a lot of computer processor memory in order to run many of the Antivirus programs. For example, McAfee takes 5 times more hard drive space to install than AVG. It states that it requires the same amount of RAM however I feel that it actually uses far more. I was not able to find any information on how much CPU McAfee requires but AVG requires a Pentium with 300MHz so its not much and would be very hard to beat. Norton requires: 300 MHz or faster processor, 256 MB of RAM (**512 MB RAM recommended and required if you use the recovery tool), and 150 MB of available hard disk space. When running AVG, it is very difficult to tell any difference in performance of your computer even if you happen to be playing a game, which requires many of your computers resources. This is one reason I recommend it to anyone.

On a second note, the virus detection rate of AVG is very high, higher than retail antivirus programs in fact. AVG is boasting an amazing detection rate of 93%. That means it will find 93 out of every 100 viruses. That is an average between the retail version and the free version. Yes it still misses some but no virus protection is perfect. AVG still manages to outperform McAfee and Norton Antivirus and find viruses that they missed every time.

Third and probably most important, ITS FREE! AVG Free is an excellent product and will out perform most antivirus that you would buy in a store. That is why the retail version of AVG is AMAZING. If you know what you are doing with computers and feel pretty safe using one you will be okay using AVG Free with Spybot or some other Spyware remover, however if you are not so comfortable with using a computer and worried about not being safe; I would recommend buying the retail version and keeping it updated. This is just to make sure you are safe. Always remember, its cheaper to pay for an antivirus than to lose all your cash to a hacker!

Finally, there are a number of programs that AVG is not compatible with. I just want to list those out here so if you have these on your computer you either need to not install AVG or remove the other program in order for it to work correctly. Webroot Spysweeper, ICQ toolbar, Session Manager 0.6.1.13 add-on, StumbleUpon Toolbar, System Protect, Dell Network Assistant, and Contafiscal 2000 are not compatible with various parts of AVG and having both on the same machine should be avoided.

In conclusion, AVG is excellent software that I highly recommend to anyone who is looking for a free solution to antivirus. It requires and uses fewer resources than many other antivirus programs, it detects approximately 93% of viruses and other malware, it has a FREE version, and there are only a few programs that it is not compatible with. So, if you are looking for an excellent addition to your computer security collection consider AVG Free. If you arent too good with computers and would like to keep the money currently in your bank account out of the hands of hackers, I would recommend paying for the retail edition.
