* Your personality type and interests – what working tasks you enjoy or dislike.

* Are you hoping to get certified because of a certain raison d’etre – i.e. are you looking at working based from home (being your own boss?)?

* Is the money you make further up on your wish list than other requirements.

* With many, many ways to train in IT – there’s a need to gain some background information on what differentiates them.

* You have to take in what is different for each individual training area.

In these situations, it’s obvious that the only real way to seek advice on these issues tends to be through a good talk with an advisor who has years of experience in IT (and chiefly it’s commercial needs and requirements.)

Consider only training programmes that’ll move onto industry acknowledged accreditations. There are way too many small colleges proposing ‘in-house’ certificates which aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on when you start your job-search.

From a commercial standpoint, only the top companies like Microsoft, Cisco, Adobe or CompTIA (to give some examples) will get you short-listed. Nothing else hits the mark.

The latest audio-visual interactive programs featuring instructor demo’s and practice lab’s will turn you off book-based study for ever more. And you’ll actually enjoy doing them.

It’s wise to view a small selection of training examples before you sign the purchase order. You should expect instructor demonstrations, video tutorials and audio-visual elements backed up by interactive lab’s.

Avoid training that is purely online. Physical CD or DVD ROM materials are preferable where offered, as you need to be able to use them whenever it’s convenient for you – ISP quality varies, so you don’t want to be totally reliant on your internet connection always being ‘up’ and available.

Massive developments are flooding technology in the near future – and this means greater innovations all the time.

We’ve only just begun to get a feel for how technology is going to shape our lives. Computers and the Internet will profoundly transform how we view and interact with the rest of the world over the next few years.

And keep in mind that on average, the income of a person in the IT market over Britain as a whole is considerably greater than the national average salary, which means you will more than likely earn significantly more once qualified in IT, than you’d get in most other industries.

Locate a program where you’ll receive a library of CD or DVD ROM’s – you’ll be learning from instructor videos and demo’s, and then have the opportunity to practice your skills in interactive lab’s.

All companies should willingly take you through a few samples of the type of training materials they provide. You should hope for instructor-led videos and interactive areas to practice in.

Go for CD and DVD ROM based physical training media if possible. This then avoids all the potential pitfalls with broadband outages, failure and signal quality issues etc.

It’s essential to have the very latest Microsoft (or any other key organisation’s) authorised exam preparation packages.

Make sure that the mock exams are not just posing the correct questions on the right subjects, but also asking them in the way that the actual final exam will phrase them. It can really throw some trainees if the phraseology and format is completely different.

Simulations and practice exams are enormously valuable for confidence building – then when the time comes for you to take your actual exams, you don’t get phased.

Most of us would love to think that our careers will remain secure and our work prospects are protected, but the growing likelihood for most sectors in the UK right now is that the marketplace is far from secure.

In actuality, security now only emerges through a swiftly increasing market, driven forward by work-skills shortages. It’s this shortage that creates just the right conditions for a higher level of market-security – definitely a more pleasing situation.

Looking at the Information Technology (IT) industry, the most recent e-Skills survey highlighted a more than 26 percent skills deficit. To explain it in a different way, this shows that the UK only has 3 certified professionals for each 4 job positions available currently.

This distressing notion underpins the validity and need for more commercially trained computer professionals across the country.

Because the IT sector is evolving at such a speed, it’s unlikely there’s any better market worth looking at for a new career.

Training in Cisco is intended for individuals who wish to work with routers and network switches. Routers are what connect networks of computers via the internet or dedicated lines. It’s advisable that you should first attempt your CCNA. Don’t be tempted to go straight for a CCNP as it’s a considerable step up – and you should gain some working knowledge before you take this on.

Jobs that use this type of qualification mean the chances are you’ll work for national or international companies that have several locations but need to keep in touch. Alternatively, you may find yourself working for an internet service provider. Either way, you’ll be in demand and can expect a high salary.

It’s a sad testimony to the sales skills of many companies, but the majority of trainees kick-off study that often sounds wonderful in the syllabus guide, but which gets us a career that is of no interest. Just ask several college students for examples.

It’s well worth a long chat to see the expectations of your industry. What particular qualifications you’ll need and in what way you can gain some industry experience. It’s definitely worth spending time thinking about how far you’d like to progress your career as it will often control your selection of certifications.

We recommend that students seek guidance and advice from a skilled professional before making your final decision on a particular learning course, so there’s no doubt that the content of a learning package provides the skills for the job being sought.

The somewhat scary thought of landing your first computer related job is often eased by some training providers because they offer a Job Placement Assistance programme. The honest truth is that it isn’t a complex operation to find the right work – assuming you’re well trained and qualified; employers in this country need your skills.

Update your CV at the beginning of your training though (advice can be sought on this via your provider). Don’t put it off till you’ve finished your exams.

It’s possible that you won’t have even qualified when you land your first junior support role; yet this is not possible if interviewers don’t get sight of your CV.

You can usually expect better results from a specialist locally based employment agency than any course provider’s employment division, because they’ll know the local area and commercial needs better.

Do make sure you don’t put hundreds of hours of effort into your studies, and then do nothing more and expect somebody else to land you a job. Get off your backside and start looking for yourself. Channel the same focus into securing a good job as it took to pass the exams.

Students often end up having issues because of a single training area very rarely considered: How the training is broken down and packaged off through the post.

Individual deliveries for each training module one stage at a time, according to your own speed is the usual method of releasing your program. Of course, this sounds sensible, but you might like to consider this:

Sometimes the steps or stages offered by the provider doesn’t suit. And what if you don’t finish each and every section inside of their particular timetable?

In a perfect world, you’d get ALL the training materials right at the beginning – meaning you’ll have all of them to return to any point – whenever it suits you. Variations can then be made to the order that you complete each objective where a more intuitive path can be found.

Have a conversation with a professional consultant and they’ll entertain you with many worrying experiences of students who’ve been conned by dodgy salespeople. Make sure you deal with an experienced industry advisor that asks lots of questions to discover the most appropriate thing for you – not for their bank-account! You must establish a starting-point that will suit you.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got any qualifications that are related, then you will often be able to begin at a different level to a trainee with no history to speak of.

Consider starting with some basic Microsoft package and Windows skills first. This can set the scene for your on-going studies and make the transition to higher-level learning a less steep.
